Traditionally speaking, the tape has been the default format for backup of critical data of the organization, and was a good choice. The main benefits is that the tapes are relatively stable, and notebooks to be able to get the courier service or a staff member to come and take the tape offsite to a location secure, ensuring that the organization's critical data is safe in the event of a disaster. However, tape backups are labor intensive and the actual cost of the tape backups are rarely calculated. Often overlooked costs include tape; / technical staff member / owners time to make the backup, technical time to perform test restores to ensure that the tapes are working technical time for real restorations also you have the hardware cost tape backup and storage cost of the tapes. Very quickly sum costs.
A statement that often threw about backup of professionals is that the backups are only as good as your last success of the restoration. Unfortunately what happens is systematically non-tape, disk, backup the USB drive and the abandonment of test restorations 34% of companies fail to test your backups tape, which do, 77% are found tape back-up failures (Source: Boston Computer 2005). The result is a loss of data when it will produce large to recover and discover that the tapes not backup the data required or are damaged and lost data. The only way after a situation as this data is that expertise is a costly exercise.
Studies have shown that 70% of businesses that suffer critical data loss go out of business within 12 months. Contingency Plans, Strategic Research Corp and DTI / Price Waterhouse Coopers (2004)
Small and medium enterprises appear to be the most exposed the risk of data loss, simply because they are specialists in their business, not technology, much less the backup data. The importance of back your data falls into the very expensive, too difficult or too busy shopping. Another classic I've heard myself is a business owner saying "I have not spent, so I worry about that when it does. "Unfortunately, with an attitude like this, when data loss occurs, it is too late.
To complicate the problem, for the first time in 2005 sold more desktops and notebooks sold more desktops because what this means is that labor force are increasingly more mobile and work on the road or from home. This presents some interesting challenges for providers of technology because there is no business data critical in portable computers, however, much of the time are not in the office, so how do you back up?
Back Up The Future Is Here!
When I was 6 years old, I remember going to a friend's house and the burden of a Commodore 64 with a tape measure Play, which is too slow and inefficient, and would take about an hour to load a very basic game. These days that almost anyone can kill the Across the planet in an Internet gaming and high-speed connections. Like the games, I think the technology has moved from tape and we are already seeing a change of line, automatic backups of encryption that are not only safe, but provide all the benefits of any software as a product of the services that the Backups can be made from anywhere in the world with Internet access without requiring the end user to do one thing, besides getting initially configuration backup software and an Internet connection.
I think that backup tapes will eventually get relegated to the museum of technology, along with the Commodore 64, so the organization will occasionally, when security is paramount and their data can not travel over the Internet that cling to them longer, but for most of the cost savings, flexibility, certainty and security will prevail and most organizations will move an online backup SaaS solutions.
